What exactly they (Muslims) are doing? They are just enforcing sharia.
Tunisia is the birth place of Arab Spring. Later when elections were held, as expected, but to the surprise of policy makers and media, Islamists won the elections there too.
US State Secretary Ms Clinton on a state visit to North African countries said (here), "There are those who question whether Islamist politics can really be compatible with democracy, Well, Tunisia has a chance to answer that question affirmatively and to demonstrate that there is no contradiction. That means not just talking about tolerance and pluralism — it means living it."
TOLERANCE AND PLURALISM IN ISLAM ???
How is it that our policy makers, intellectuals, enlightened opinion makers and media are so much distant from ground reality esp. when it has to do with Islam? Or is it the fear that 'What next if all this is true about Islam' !! The plain truth - however bitter it is - is one day we all have to face it. Right now, no one knows about what will be their future.
Coming to the incident, even before this incident, many events in Tunisia clearly showed where it is headed. Still, Sharia has not become official in Tunisia. So what?
As strictures of Sharia have theological basis in Koran and Sunna, they become part of beliefs of Muslims and influences Muslims in their behavior with Non-Muslims; and there are always 'more than' sufficient number of Muslims to put their beliefs in to action like they did here.
Reliance of Traveller, manual of Sharia law of Shafi'i school of Islam, says the following with respect to how Non-Muslims should be treated:
@O11.5
Such non-Muslim subjects are obliged to comply with Islamic rules that pertain to the safety and indemnity of life, reputation, and property. In addition, they:
-1- are penalized for committing adultery or theft, thought not for drunkenness;
-2- are distinguished from Muslims in dress, wearing a wide cloth belt (zunnar);
-3- are not greeted with "as-Salamu 'alaykum";
-4- must keep to the side of the street;
-5- may not build higher than or as high as the Muslims' buildings, though if they acquire a tall house, it is not razed;
-6- are forbidden to openly display wine or pork, (A: to ring church bells or display crosses,) recite the Torah or Evangel aloud, or make public display of their funerals and feastdays;
-7- and are forbidden to build new churches.
Read the sentence in red color and italics. And of course, we will still be hearing that Islam is plural and tolerant for long time to come.
