Islamists in Indonesia: Gender equality harms Islamic values

Out of 6 groups expressing such views, one is Indonesian Ulema Council. How come this group understands Islam so badly and so different from what Islamic spokesmen and women and their apologists (liberal and leftist) say in media like THE HINDU about Islam being the first one to bring women out of oppression ? That too considering that members of Ulema have spent their whole life in studying Koran and other Islamic scriptures, one can only wonder which version of Islam could be right. May be recalling some verses from Koran will help clearing dilemma to some extent.

Koranic verse 4:34:  Men are in charge of women because Allah made one of them superior to other, and because men spend their property for supporting women.....so good women are obedient to men. If not, husbands can beat wives.

Koranic verse 2:282:  ..........witness of two women is equal to witness of one man .....

Koranic verse 2:228: ......The men are a degree above women ....

Koranic verse 2:223:  Your wives are like tilth to you...so approach your wives as you approach tilth....

Koranic verse 4:11 : Share of a son is equal to share of two daughters in inheritance ........

One can add (read WHAT PROPHET SAID ON WOMEN) few more to this illustrious Koranic guidelines like a man can take as many as wives with the constrain of not more than 4 at any time and his explicit right to divorce wives at his will.

In twisting facts, often Islamic apologists, including women, say these are literal interpretations of Koran and Koran actually liberates women from oppression.

Above argument is naive considering that Koran is considered to be set of guidelines and rules for Muslims to live by with Allah saying Koran is simple to understand and these guidelines are never to be changed. More over, commands of master to slave are never in code or in some obscure language.

Arab Spring and the Muslim women

I might not have been in my senses to see that Egyptian uprising is all about people, democracy and freedom; at least not in the sense we understand democracy and freedom. (I was told thrice like this.)

Like in other aspects, Arab spring is turning out to be Arab winter for most Muslim women. Sure, Muslim women took part in uprisings and that will be their last successful participation in the future to come as Islamist parties have already announced, after winning elections, any law contradicting Sharia will not be allowed.

Only ignorants blame these Islamist parties because any opinion poll taken in Islamic countries tells the real problem: overwhelming majority of Muslims want Islam to play a larger role and firmly believe that Islam is the solution to all the problems afflicting their societies. No wonder then, Muslim women will find more legalized discrimination against them and more restrictions on them.

To understand what role Islam has towards Muslim women, one needs to look at what Prophet Mohammad said in his farewell sermon:

You have rights over your wives and they have rights over you. You have the right that they should not defile your bed and that they should not behave with open unseemliness. If they do, God allows you to put them in separate rooms and to beat them but not with severity. If they refrain from these things they have the right to their food and clothing with kindness. Lay injunctions on women kindly, for they are prisoners with you having no control of their persons.You have taken them only as a trust from God, and you have enjoinment of their persons by the words of God....                
(Ibn Ishaq in biography of Prophet Mohammad, page 651)

What happened to the lofty Islamic claim of Islam being the first religion to recognize and grant women's rights and to free them from oppression? Anwar Sheikh explains that Islamic ulema and intellectuals invented this lie to keep away Muslim women from open rebellion. The best way to find about this question is to read Islamic sources like Koran, Hadith and Sharia law itself. Or one can look around opening their eyes and ears.

Here, yet again in the birth place of Islam- Saudi Arabia, Muslim female students are protesting against discrimination against them in universities and got injured.

One can also  recall that in the year 2002, Saudi police in their Islamic zeal to enforcing women to wear veil caused 15 women burn to death by refusing to let some of trapped women inside burning building out as they were not in proper Islamic attire (here).

Even in India, in the so called prestigious Islamic university, Aligarh, women are not allowed in to library and there are also many reports of Muslim male students trying to force Muslim women teachers to wear veils; response of our Govt. in all this is to simply stay out in the name of  'not interfering in Islamic institutions'.

An investigation has been launched after at least 50 women were reportedly injured when a protest at a university in Saudi Arabia turned violent. 

Hundreds of women took part in the protest against discrimination and mismanagement at the King Khalid University, in Abha, on Wednesday. 

Dozens were said to have been injured after security forces and religious police moved in to break it up. 

The university said some of the students had attacked staff. 

The BBC's Arab Affairs Editor, Sebastian Usher, says that images of the women shouting in protest against the university authorities were posted on social media and networking websites...........

Malaysian Muslim women launch obedient wife club

Prophet Mohammad said that devout and good Muslim women are those who maintain chastity and are obedient to their husbands (also the verse 4:34). Prophet further said that a woman can not serve Allah with out carrying the right of her husband. In fact, when a Muslim woman dies she will go to heaven if only her husband is pleased with her.

In April, a Muslim MP in Malaysia said that Muslim men are having extra marital relations because women(wives) are neglecting their duty and are not obedient (here):

Malaysian men have extramarital sex because of “wives who neglect their responsibilities” to their husbands, a Malaysian lawmaker told Parliament on Thursday, outraging women’s groups.
“Husbands driving home after work see things that are sexually arousing and go to their wives to ease their urges,” said independent lawmaker Ibrahim Ali, according to online portal Malaysiakini.
“But when they come home to their wives, they will say, ‘wait, I’m cooking,’ or ‘wait, I’m getting ready to visit relatives’,” Ibrahim said.
“In Islam, wives are supposed to stop everything to fulfill their husband’s demands.”

So now, we have some Muslim women in Malaysia volonteering to help Muslim women being more obedient to their husbands so that their husbands do not go astray and they formed a club for this purpose.

AFP - A group of Malaysian Muslim women say they will fight divorce, domestic violence and other problems -- by appealing to wives to be more obedient, according to one of the organisers.

Maznah Taufik said "The Obedient Wife Club" being launched Saturday is aimed at drawing women who will be taught how to please their husbands better to prevent them from straying or misbehaving.

"We just want to ask all the wives to be obedient wives so that there will be fewer problems in our society," such as infidelity, divorce and domestic violence, she told AFP.

"Obedient wife means they are trying to entertain their husbands, not only taking care of their food and clothes," Maznah said. "They have to obey their husbands. That's the way Islam also asks."

Malaysia is a Muslim-majority country, with some 60 percent of the population practicing the religion, alongside large ethnic Chinese and Indian communities who are mostly Buddhist, Hindu and Christian.

According to local media, the country's divorce rate doubled from 2002 to 2009, with rates higher among Muslims than non-Muslims.

Maznah said it was also the men's responsibility to teach their wives to be obedient.

"Some wives, they just want to get married for leisure but they don't know the responsibility," she said.

"To entertain their husbands is compulsory. If she doesn't do this, the husband will look for another woman... and the house will break down."..........

MP further quotes, “In Islam, wives are supposed to stop everything to fulfill their husband’s demands.” This argument is in line with reported teachings of Prophet Mohammad (Prophet on Muslim women.) and overall position of women in Islamic theology. On other hand, this kind of observation reinforces the main line present day Islamic belief that neither Islam nor Muslim men are never wrong and it is other's fault if Muslims do wrong. The best example is a Mufti saying Muslim men can not be faulted for raping women and it is the fault of women not wearing veil; or infidel women are looked on as characterless or the fact of Islam looking at Non Muslims with disdain and contempt or the prevalence of culture among Muslim men boasting about raping or seducing infidel women (here). 

This kind of statements coming from modern Malaysia testifies to how Islamic beliefs, which are rejected by Muslim apologists when speaking to infidels, pervade through Muslim societies irrespective of index of development and modernization. Interestingly, feminists and leftists are least likely to express outrage on such observations either because of fear of retribution from Islamists or their feeling that their condemnation results in strengthening hardliners at home or, probably this is the reason, their belief that Koran never really means what it says or Muslims never mean to imply and do what they really say (here):

Ali heads Perkasa, a right-wing Malay nationalist group seeking to protect ethnic Malay dominance in politics.

His strident comments came as he asked about plans by the government’s religious development department to educate wives on their responsibilities.

Wives failing in their duties pushed men to go to “private places to satisfy their urges”, he said.

An aide to the lawmaker confirmed the remarks but declined further comment.

His comments prompted fury among women’s groups in a nation with a growing sex industry and a problem with human trafficking.

Women’s Aid Organisation chief Ivy Josiah said Ibrahim’s comments were unacceptable for a parliamentarian.

“I am appalled as he equates women to being a sex toy and what is worse is that he uses religion to try and justify his position,” she told AFP.

“The comments not only show that Ibrahim Ali is a Malay supremacist but a male supremacist as well.”

Rights group Tenaganita, who monitor issues of human trafficking and abuse, said such sentiments were one of the causes of human trafficking in the country.

“Because people like Ibrahim Ali believe it is their right to get sex anytime from their wives, or otherwise seek it from elsewhere, that’s why you have a growing sex industry and we see such human trafficking cases,” senior coordinator Aegile fernandez told AFP.

Last March, the government launched a national plan against human trafficking as the country moves to quash its image as a transit point for traffickers.

With one of Asia’s largest populations of foreign labour, Malaysia relies on illegal and legal migrants to work as domestic servants, in plantations, factories and to service the local sex industry.

Malaysian lawmakers also clashed with women’s groups last month after a government parliamentarian claimed women were “slow” at the wheel and “oblivious” on the roads.

'Islamic emancipation' of women from Saudi Arabia.

Make temporary announcements to escape immediate criticism and then try to deflect attention from relevant issues. Standard Islamic procedure. Right after 9/11, Saudi Arabia, under international pressure, mentioned that it will be conducting municipal elections and women also can vote. When elections were conducted in the year 2005, women were not allowed to vote and instead, were promised that they could do so in next elections. But it turns out that, women casting their votes has to wait for more time, if at all they ever do so in future (one can read on this from here).

What is so un-Islamic about women voting? Well if they do vote, when votes are counted, votes cast by women have to be counted as equal to votes cast by men; but Islam says value of a Muslim woman is only half the value of a Muslim man and Koran says men are above women. Islam even says women are deficient in intelligence and religion too. Saudi law literally discriminates women in all fields like compensation in qisas: if maximum limit a Muslim man can be compensated for some injury or death is 100,000 rials, that limit is only 50,000 rials for women (one can read from here).

This is the kind of Islamic law what Islamists want to impose on the whole world. Please do not say that Koran does not say anything on stoning because Islam is not just Koranic affair. What Prophet did and taught is also part of Islam and Islamic jurisprudence. Islamic sources make it crystal clear that he did order stoning as punishment for adultery and first four caliphs rightfully followed his example after Prophet's death. Sexual rights of Muslim men on their wives and sex slaves.

Koran is literal word of Allah who is the only God; Muslims would love and wish every one to believe this. In their effort to propagate their faith they say Islam means peace and justice and try to fool infidels in to believing that all those verses of warfare in Koran are meant for removing injustice. They will never explain what is 'injustice' which is the key word. See, if Allah means so much against injustice why he legalized institution of slavery and has even given the rights to Muslim men to have sex with women slaves.

In Islam, if a married women is captured in a war her marriage immediately becomes void even if her husband is alive; she becomes a sex slave to her new Muslim master. There is no limit on number of concubines a Muslim man can have. Akbar had about 5000 Hindu women as concubines in his harem while his son had about 6000. Many people in complete ignorance associate slavery with west but it is west which played a crucial role in abolishing this abominable institution though it also has its hands dirtied. Saudi Arabia banned slavery only in 1960s.

Until the year 1857 AD Islamic slavery continued in India and then British banned it. But we do not see this in our history text books because leftists and marxists in their eternal hatred towards west want to blacken British rule of India while glorifying Islamic rule and do not mention Islam bringing slavery, completely an alien concept, in to India.

Hadith on Muslim women.

Ms. Dalia Mogahed who advices US President on Islam and US policies with respect to Islamic world said in a Britsh television program, "Sharia is not well understood and Islam as a faith is not well understood. Most Muslim women worldwide associate Sharia with gender justice." (full version here). There is enough on this blog, presented from Islamic sources, pointing to other direction. The best way to learn Islam is to read from Koran and Hadith rather than listening to some one, who may not always be honest. In this regard, I present some hadith on what prophet said about women in this post and I will be adding more hadith in the future. I presented these hadith earlier in a post but I felt these need a separate post for the purpose of future references.

Leaflet calling Muslims boys in UK to seduce Sikh girls (Hindu-Muslim inter religious marriages)

The news of leaflet that appeared in UK calling Muslim boys to seduce Sikh girls is very old and goes back to the year 2005. After this the cases of love jihad surfaced in India but media ridiculed Hindu groups branding them as fascists for opposing inter religious marriages saying such marriages create harmony. If opposition to such marriages is criteria for declaring people as fascists, these enlightened people should know that Islam fits in to category of fascism because Koran bans Muslims girls marrying infidel men. Islamic law states that such infidels are put to death. Of course Muslims men can marry Non Muslim women. This Islamic belief and law ensures certain death to infidel cultures and civilizations in the long run. One can read what is in leaflet from here or below where I put it up.

Islamic morality and Afghan sex practices from wikileaks.

What do Muslims say about infidels esp. western cultures? They are morally corrupt as if Christianity and every other religion is encouraging lesbianism if not pedophilia because none can beat Islam in this regard with their own Prophet marrying 9 year old girl and Koran sanctioning child marriages. One of the documents of many leaked documents (wikileaks) say that extent of dual problems (lesbianism and pedophilia) is very high in Afghanistan that is 100% Muslim.

Punishment for Fornication (illegal intercourse or adultery) in Islamic law: stoning or flogging.

Iran was in news for sentencing a woman to death by stoning as she was accused of adultery and the punishment was suspended because of objections from Human Rights commission (here). Recently, it emerged that in Sudan each year 40,000 women are flogged for one or other supposedly moral crime (here):

Forty thousand women in Sudan are subject to police whippings for moral transgressions each year, a figure that came to light after a video was circulated on the Internet which showed the public thrashing of a Khartoum woman.

Sudanese feminist and political figure Mariam al-Sadiq al-Madi brought the issue to the attention of authorities, the Sudanese daily al-Sharq al-Awsat reported. The drama of the physical punishments against women in Sudan is much more serious than previously believed," al-Madi said. She said that each year around 600,000 lashes are dealt to women in Sudan.

There was even a case of a Bangladeshi woman dying of flogging (or lashing) she was subjected to (here) on the accusations of adultery. Constitution of Bangladesh is fairly secular but it is not going to stop Muslim moral police to inflict Islamic punishments. What is the proper punishment for adultery according to Islamic laws?

Women with “seditious” eyes must cover up; You see, Muslim men are never at fault for attractions and rapes.

Of  course we have seen Muslim ulema saying that muslims men can not be faulted if they rape women who do not wear veil (here or here). But it looks like, wearing veil is not sufficient for women; it must be really getting difficult for muslim men to control their urges; at least Saudi police think this way and are saying that Women with “seditious” eyes must cover up.

Women can not drive in Saudi Arabia. Yes, it is few authorities in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia who misinterpreted Islam badly, but people are moderate Muslims and Islam is really kind and liberating for women!

Child marriage in Islam and evil of Ruhollah Khomeini

I mentioned that all knowing god Allah does not prescribe minimum age for marriage for girls or boys. He literally tells that men can marry and divorce girls who are not pubescent (65:04).

Ruhollah Khomeini, father of Islamic revolution in Iran, has infamously said that Muslim men can marry baby girls of few hours and they even can enjoy these babies sexually without penetration until the girl reaches age of 9. Well he even practiced it; Watch this video at faithfreedom.org:

Ayatollah Khomeini writes (here): "A man can have sexual pleasure from a child as young as a baby.  However, he should not penetrate vaginally, but sodomising the child is acceptable.  If a man does penetrate and damage the child then, he should be responsible for her subsistence all her life.  This girl will not count as one of his four permanent wives and the man will not be eligible to marry the girl’s sister…  It is better for a girl to marry at such a time when she would begin menstruation at her husband’s house, rather than her father’s home.  Any father marrying his daughter so young will have a permanent place in heaven.

A Selection from "Resaleh" (Towzih ol Masael) Book of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini:

I. A woman may legally belong to a man in one of two ways; by permanent marriage or temporary marriage (Siqeh). In the former, the duration of the marriage needs not to be specified; in the latter, it must be stipulated, for example, that it is for a period of an hour, a day, a month, a year, or more.

II. A man can marry a girl younger than nine years of age, even if the girl is still a baby being breastfed. A man, however is prohibited from having intercourse with a girl younger than nine, other sexual acts such as foreplay, rubbing, kissing and sodomy is allowed. A man having intercourse with a girl younger than nine years of age has not committed a crime, but only an infraction, if the girl is not permanently damaged. If the girl, however, is permanently damaged, the man must provide for her all her life. But this girl will not count as one of the man's four permanent wives. He also is not permitted to marry the girl's sister.

III. A father or a paternal grandfather has the right to marry off a child who is insane or has not reached puberty by acting as her representative. The child may not annul such a marriage after reaching puberty or regaining her sanity, unless the marriage is to her manifest disadvantage.............
